Sign at the Old Settlement Quarry in Stonington, Deer Isle, Maine on the operation of a pole derrick for hoisting large blocks of granite stone.

Large rusted spike lying on exposed Deer Isle granite. A bit of history of what once was a working quarry. Nature is once again reclaiming its own. Trees are growing out from the fissures created by the quarry men who have now gone from this place. On close examination you can see where the lichen is beginning to take hold and will eventually hide the scared granite from sight.

Going through some of my old files and thought this would be interesting to share. It is a photo of a pulley used on the derrick crane to haul the huge blocks of granite at the Old Settlement Quarry located in Stonington, Deer Isle, Maine.
